John Poyser was called to the bar in Manitoba in 1987,
and has practiced as a partner with the Winnipeg law
firm Inkster Christie Hughes LLP since 1999 as a member
of the firm’s boutique practice group The Wealth
and Estate Law Group. His practice is limited to estate and trust
planning, and since the introduction mobility rules for lawyers
he has helped clients in Manitoba, Ontario, Alberta and British
Columbia reduce taxes and make special arrangements to improve
the lives of beneficiaries. As of 2009, he is securing his call
to the Bar in Alberta and is joining The Wealth and Estate Law
Group (Alberta), a recently minted law firm in Calgary providing
services limited to the planning, administration, and taxation of
trusts and estates along with associated litigation.
He is heavily involved in the leadership and education of lawyers
working with wills and estates. At a national level, he serves as
Secretary to the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).
He is also a past chair of the Wills, Estates and Trusts Section of
the Canadian Bar Association (CBA), and headed a national working
group for the CBA compiling and comparing succession laws for lawyers
across Canada. He continues to administer the updating process to
that project on contract to the CBA.
At a provincial level in Manitoba, John is a past chair of The
Winnipeg Chapter of STEP, and a past chair of the Wills and Estates
Section of the Manitoba Bar Association.
John has lectured extensively on estate planning and succession tax
planning, including presentations in Toronto, London, Ottawa,
Halifax, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, and at various
conference locations abroad for Canadian lawyers and advisors. He
has published nationally, including journal articles and practice
notes for lawyers, magazine articles for advisors, and newspaper
articles for the public. He authors a monthly column in the
Winnipeg Free Press entitled “Succession,” and a soon to be
appearing column for the Calgary Herald.
John is the co-author of a textbook for Thomson-Carswell entitled
“Taxation of Trusts and Estates, A Practitioner’s Guide,” now
in its fifth edition, helping accountants and lawyers deal with
income tax and planning issues arising out of trusts and estates.
He teaches two certificate level courses geared for financial
advisors and offered through The Knowledge Bureau, “Use of Trusts
in Tax and Estate Planning”, and “Death of a Taxpayer.” Finally,
he serves as an Associate Editor of the Estates & Trusts Reports,
a national case law reporting service. |
